OBITUARIES FROM 2002 December 24, 2002 George

Eva Mae George, 89, of Calvert City, formerly of Marion, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at Oakview Nursing Home in Calvert City.
She was a homemaker and member of New Life Baptist Church in Paducah.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, William R. George; a brother and sister.
Her parents were A.J. Sutton and Eliza Mills Sutton.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Helen Casey of Ledbetter and Don and Cheri George of Long Beach, Calif.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; six nephews and one niece.
Services were Sunday, Dec. 22 at Lakeland Funeral Home Chapel in Eddyville with the Rev. Michael Grimes officiating. Burial in New Bethel Cemetery in Lyon County.

 

Franklin

Thomas R. Franklin, 76, of Marion, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002 at Salem Springlake Care Center.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Franklin; two sons, Patrick Thomas Franklin and Curtis Ray Franklin, both of Marion; three daughters, Patricia Sue Franklin and Tammy Lewis, both of Marion, and Carla Renee Hardin of Salem; two sisters, Iva Nell Rowe of Rhode Island and Patsy Hutchcraft of Evansville, Ind.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Mr. Franklin was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral service was 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. David LeNeave, the Rev. Wayne Carter and the Rev. Mike Morrow officiating. Burial in Union Cemetery.

 

Maddux

Hazel S. Maddux, 83, of Salem, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Salem Springlake Care Center.
She was a member of Salem Baptist Church and The Birthday Club.
Mrs. Maddux is survived by two sons, Gregory Maddux of Marion and Phil Maddux of Salem; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse P. Maddux, and one sister. Her parents were Leo P. and Lou Ella Ware Boyette.
Funeral service was Monday, Dec. 23 at Boyd Funeral Home with the Rev. John East officiating. Burial in Salem Cemetery.

Smith

Joseph H. Smith Sr., 76, of Burna, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.
Mr. Smith is survived by four sons, Joseph H. Smith Jr. of Lula, Ga., Gary Martin of Brooksville, Fla., Joseph Kelly Smith of Burna, Steve Martin of Lowell, Tenn.; two daughters, Glenda Sloam of The Village, Barbara Smith of Posen, Ill.; two brothers, John Benny Smith of Lola and Paul G. Smith of Arkansas; two sisters, Louise Jobe of Elmhurst, Ill. and Dollie Hooten of Salem; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Edith J. Smith; one brother and two sisters. His parents were Joseph and Birdie Buckler Smith.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 22 at Boyd Funeral Home with Bishop Erby Reed officiating. Burial in Salem Cemetery.

Lula Belle Hunt, 62, of Marion, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002 at Crittenden Hospital.
A member of Hurricane Church, she is survived by several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Hunt.

Her parents were Lonnie and Mae Workman.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Porter officiating. Burial in Mapleview Cemetery.

Beshears

Evalyn Beshears, 79, of Marion, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville, Tenn.
She attended Marion Baptist Church.

Survivors include her son, William Beshears of Eddyville; one daughter, Tonya Brann of Windermere, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchildren.

Her parents were John and Myrtle Wright. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Beshears, a sister and brother.

Funeral service was Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Clarke officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Hunt

Ronnie Hunt, 51, of Marion, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002 at home.
He was a member of Cave Springs General Baptist Church, Crittenden County Rescue Squad and Fire
Department, Chief of Shady Grove Fire Department, Crittenden County First Responders and Boilermaker Local 40.

Survivors include his wife, Evonne Hunt of Marion; son, Shane Hunt of Marion; daughter, Kristin Belt of Marion; and two grandsons.

Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Phillips and the Rev. Bill Ervin officiating. Burial in Mapleview Cemetery.

Threlkeld

Marie Threlkeld, 90, of West Chester, Pa., formerly of Marion, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 in Bellingham, Pa.

Survivors include her daughters, Alice C. Lodge of Strafford, Pa.; sister, Shirley Schramm of Marion; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was Tuesday, Dec. 17 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Garvey officiating. Burial in Shady Grove Cemetery.

Cox

Martha K. Cox, 70, of Marion, formerly of Cedar Lake, Ind., died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at Crittenden Hospital.

She was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cedar Lake.
Survivors include her son, Philip G. Cox of Cedar Lake; two brothers, Jerry Gilland of Marion and Thomas Gilland of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two sisters, Linnie Holloman and Mary Jones, both of Marion; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Her parents were Thomas and Vancie Gilland.

Walker

Ru James Walker, 84, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., formerly of Livingston County, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M.

Mr. Walker is survived by his wife, Marie Quertermous Walker of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; daughters, Neva Mae Walker of Truth or Consequences, N.M., and Rose Ella Walker of Albuquerque, N.M.; two grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by a brother. His parents were Howard V. and Iva Clemens Walker.
Services were Thursday, Dec. 12 at Boyd Funeral Chapel in Salem with the Rev. David LeNeave officiating. Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery.

 

Sunderland

Glenn Sunderland, 65, of Salem, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002 at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah.

He retired as a project manager after 24 years with Jarvis B. Webb Company.

Survivors include four sisters, Lela Lester and Wilma Hombirg, both of Salem, and Charlene Sunderland and Edna Edmiston, both of Paducah; three brothers, Carmon Sunderland of Salem, James Sunderland of West Paducah and John C. Sunderland of Henderson; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents were Charles W. and Lottie Myrick Sunderland.

Services were Monday, Dec. 16 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem with Sister Lucy Tedrick and the Rev. Wayne Carter officiating. Burial in Bethel Cemetery.

Robinson

Robert "Bob" Robinson, 74, of Marion, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002 at Crittenden Hospital.
Mr. Robinson retired from the U.S. Army after more than 24 years as a staff sergeant. He later served as a Crittenden County school bus driver.

He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Robinson, and several nieces and nephews.
His parents were Addie and Marie Robinson.

Funeral service was Saturday, Dec. 7 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Full military rites were given during burial in Mapleview Cemetery.

Walker

Ru James Walker, 84, of Truth or Consequences, N.M., formerly of Livingston County, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M.

Vaughan

Bruce Vaughan, 83, of Phelan, Calif., died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002.

Born and raised in Crittenden County, his family relocated to Indiana in 1937. A veteran of World War II, he was a prisoner of war in Germany for 16 months. He retired from the Air Force.

He is survived by a son, Dennis Vaughan, of Haltom City, Texas; sisters, Allie Feller of Stuart, Fla., and Martha Patmor of Marion; brothers, Kelly Vaughan of Kansas City, Mo., and Gavin Vaughan of Alvin, Texas.

His parents were Harry and Eva Vaughan.

Voss

John "Jack" Voss, 65, of Marion, died Saturday, Dec. 7. 2002 at Crittenden Hospital.

The former owner of Voss Farm Equipment in Marion, Mr. Voss attended St. John's Episcopal Church in Morganfield, was an honorary member of Marion Lion's Club and was a scout master.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Voss of Marion; daughters, Michelle Minton of Marion and Allison Shepherd of Elizabethtown; stepdaughters, Melissa Sherfinski of Bowling Green and Bethany Sherfinski of Ludington, Mich.; and one grandson.

His parents were Bill and Mary Agnes Voss.

Funeral services were 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10 at Gilbert Funeral Home with the Rev. Rick Oakley officiating. Burial in Mapleview Cemetery.

Stroud

Marie Stroud, 90, of Salem, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002 at Crittenden Hospital.

She was a member of Cave Springs Missionary Baptist Church, and a 58-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit No. 217 in Burna.

She is survived by two grandsons, William S. Wheeler of Marion and Steven Wheeler of Ledbetter.
Her parents were Owen and Pearl Doctorman Bragdon. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Willie Stroud; daughter, Billie Sue Tyner; a brother and three sisters.

Services were Sunday, Dec. 8 at Boyd Funeral Chapel in Salem with the Rev. Roger Holloman officiating. Burial was in Good Hope Cemetery.

Ruth Lockheart, 85, of Salem, died Nov. 28 at Livingston Hospital.
She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Salem Birthday Club.

Mrs. Lockheart is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Weaver of Hampton; four grandchildren, Debbie Radcliffe Stigall of Gilbertsville, Michael Radcliff of Calvert City, Heather Weaver McDowell and Ryan Weaver, both of Hampton; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Monette Radcliffe; second husband, Perce Ryan Lockheart; one son, Jim Radcliffe; a brother and three sisters.

William Denver Robertson, 83, of Marion, died Nov. 29 at Crittenden Hospital.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Robertson was retired from Whirlpool. He attended Vann Ave. Baptist Church in Evansville, Ind.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Inez Robertson of Marion; two sisters, Bobbie McHone of Cross, S.C., and Irene Clark of Blackford; and one brother, Robert Robertson of Sturgis.

Services were Dec. 2 at Vanover Funeral Home in Clay, with burial at Shady Grove Cemetery in Shady Grove. The Rev. Robert Nall officiated.

McDowell

Douglas Glenn McDowell, 67, of Marion, died Dec. 1 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

A U.S. Army veteran, he is survived by his wife, Betty McDowell of Marion; three sons, Mike, Steven and David McDowell, all of Marion; five daughters, Patricia Terrell of Eddyville, Laura Madden of Henderson, Cheryl Griffin of Lawton, Okla., Kathy Gray of Princeton, Bettina Damron of Marion; a sister, Lois Dorroh of Eddyville; two brothers, Eddie and Jim McDowell, both of Marion; and seven grandchildren.

His parents were Ernest and Izella McDowell. He was also preceded in death by an infant child.

Babb

Mary B. Babb, 92, of Marion, died Nov. 27 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center.
She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Babb was preceded in death by her first husband, Clay Jennings; second husband, James N. Babb; two daughters, Edna Travis Thurmond and Betty Dunbar; and a son, Jimmy Jennings.

Her parents were James Henry Hackney and Sadie Elmer White.

Survivors include her daughter, Sue Belt of Marion; two stepdaughters, Anna Speaks of Kirksville, Mo., and Wanda McVay of Henderson; one son, Ronnie Babb of Elizabethtown; three sisters, Edith Harper of Madisonville, Bobbie Jean Jones of St. Charles and Bonnie Montgomery of Clay; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great-grandchildren.

Blackburn

PRINCETON ­ Lawrence "Pop" Blackburn, 82, of Fredonia, died Dec. 1 at Princeton Health Care Manor.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a retired heavy equipment operator and a member of Fredonia Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Clarena Morgan Blackburn; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Gail Blackburn of Princeton and Steve and Mindy Blackburn of Eddyville; daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Buzzy Phelps and Cindy and Roy Rogers, all of Fredonia, and Renee and Aubry Hollamon of Marion; two brothers, Jim Blackburn of Princeton and John Blackburn of Fredonia; four stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.

His parents were Kell and Pearl Riley Blackburn. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Marc Blackburn, and a sister, Frances Tackwell.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. ­ Oakley Hurse, 72, died Nov. 22 at his residence. He was born in Marion and retired from Whirlpool Corp. in 1990 after 43 years of service. He was most recently employed by Hertz Rental Car Company.

An Army veteran of the Korean War, he received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He is survived by four daughters, Linda Camacho of Gulfport, Miss., Carolyn Wolf of Evansville, Anna Louise Johnson of Richland, Ind., Shirley Klem of Evansville; a son, Charles Ashley of Elberfeld, Ind.; two brothers, Frank Hunt of Evansville, Thomas Hunt of Louisville; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Ruth Hurse, and a son, Harvey Ed Ashley.
Services were Nov. 27 at Browning Funeral Home in Evansville. Burial was in Locust Hill Cemetery.

Lena O. Brown, 85, of Marion, died Nov. 13 at Salem Springlake Care Center. Funeral services were Nov. 16 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Phillips officiating. Burial was in Shady Grove Cemetery.
Survivors include three nephews, Herman Barton of Marion, Wayne Barton of Phoenix, Ariz., Chris Sauls of Texas; and three nieces, Joyce Vincent and Virginia Woods of Madisonville and Jean Beard of Colorado.

Tinsley

Funeral services for Caleb Tinsley, 6, of Marion, were held Nov. 27 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Harold Rittenberry and Rev. Nicky Davis officiated. Burial was in Whites Chapel Cemetery.
Tinsley died Nov. 24 at Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville.

He is survived by his father, Wesley "Pat" Tinsley of Marion; his stepmother, Glenda Tinsley of Marion; grandparents, William and Carolyn Sue Sunderland of Marion and Ruby Tinsley of Tolu; stepgrandparents, Dewey and Connie Cowan of Marion; stepsisters, Bridgette Cowan and Brittany Cowan, both of Marion; and a stepbrother, Cody Cowan of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Denise Tinsley; and a grandfather, Bill Tinsley.

Ruby S. Croft, 95, of Marion, died Nov. 11 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a member of Liberty Grove Christian Church and Matlock Memorial Church.

Surviving are a daughter, Helen Robinson of Marion; two sons, Harold Keith Croft of Marion and Franklin G. Croft of Evansville; a brother, Marvin Singleton of Salem; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and 18 step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy J. Croft; and a son, Neil Croft. Her parents were Frank and Eula Belt Singleton.

Moore

James D. Moore, 67, of Marion, died Nov. 26 at his home. He was a member of Hurricane Church, was caretaker of Hurricane Cemetery, was a member of Hurricane Camp Board and Bigham Lodge No. 256.

Surviving are his wife, Polly Moore of Marion; a son, Jackie Moore of Marion; a daughter, Jennifer Doom of Smithland; a sister, Karen Ordway of Marion; a brother, Bill Moore of Draffenville; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Gail Moore; and his parents, Douglas and Lucille Moore.

Dorothy Rose Woodson, 79, of Marion, died Nov. 19 at Livingston Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Greenville.

Surviving are four daughters, Rose Ann Fetzer of Jefferson City, Tenn., Nancy Hazzard of Princeton, Betty Brown of Marion and Barbara Wolford of Owensboro; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Hylan Hale Woodson, Jr.; her parents, Elmer Lee and Margaret Mae Reagan; and six brothers.

Private services will be held at a later date with burial in New Bethel Cemetery.

Wood

Glenn Brown Wood, 82, of Crittenden County, formerly of Clay, died Nov. 17 at his home. He was retired from Southern States Co-op and was service manager at the Clay branch. He was a member and elder of Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a charter member of Webster County Genealogy and Historical Society. He was a charter member of the board of directors of the organization of the Shady Grove Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Atwell Wood; a daughter, Bridget Hasler of Tuscola, Ill.; a son, Bruce Wood of Byron, Ga.; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Nov. 20 at Oak Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church near Clay with Rev. Dale Williams officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

STURGIS, Ky. ­ Haline Vick, 89, died Nov. 17 at Colonial Trace Nursing Home in Sebree. She was a member of Sullivan Baptist Church.

Gerding

CARRSVILLE, Ky. ­ Dean Gerding, 41, died Nov. 9 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. Gerding was critically injured after his motorcycle hit a deer on Ky. 135 near Carrsville Oct. 31.

Gerding was a member of Carrsville Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Navy, was a Boy Scout leader for eight years, and spent 13 years with the Department of Transportation as a motor vehicle inspector.

Surviving are his wife, Sherry Gerding of Carrsville; a son, Hayden Gerding of Carrsville; a daughter, Teresa Gerding of Carrsville; his mother, Dorothy Gerding of Carrsville; and a sister, Deana Gerding, also of Carrsville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hayden Gerding; and a son, Carl Hayden Gerding.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hayden A. Alsobrook and Carrie Boswell Alsobrook; and two husbands, John Hendricks and Bobby Carroll.

Funeral services for Ronald J. Janus, 63, of Marion, formerly of northern Indiana, were held Nov. 12 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Mickey Quinton and Rev. Tim Fouts officiated. Burial was in Crayne Cemetery.

Janus died Nov. 8 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. He was a member of Life In Christ Church, the National Rifle Association, was former owner of Mobile Home Furnace and Supply and Shady Side Mobile Home Court in Indiana. He was a member of the Indiana Home Association.

Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Janus of Marion; a son, John Raymond Janus of Marion; three daughters, Jayne Bey of Portage, Ind., June Smith of Portage and Joyce Janus-Beauregard of Georgetown, S.C.; a brother, Paul J. Janus of Indiana; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

SALEM, Ky. ­ Wayne Jeffrey, 87, died Nov. 7 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center. He was a member of Ohio Valley Baptist Church in Ledbetter. He was a farmer and building contractor.

Mary Roberts, 75, of Marion died Nov. 7 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of the Eastern Star, White Shrine, Republican Women's Club and Repton Baptist Church.

SALEM, Ky. ­ Kenneth William Adams, 62, died Oct. 28 at his home. He was a member of Faith Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Salem and was on the board of directors of Hurricane Campground.

Surviving are his former wife of 33 years, Peggy Adams; five daughters, Anita R. Johnson of Loraine, Ohio, B. Michelle Matney of Mavisdale, Va., Camille G. Adams of Loraine, Heather Tawes of Ledbetter and Kendra Adams of Salem; a brother, Terry Adams of Salem; and four grandchildren.

She attended Western Kentucky University and taught elementary school for several years before moving to Florida. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fort Myers and the Fort Myers Country Club. She was a member of the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Del., and the Filson Club in Louisville.

She is survived by her husband, T. Rankin Terry, formerly of Crittenden County; two sons, T. Rankin Terry, Jr., and John O. Terry, both of Fort Myers; a daughter, Joan W. Terry Mollett of Princess Anne, Md.; and two grandchildren.

Her parents were George H. and Julia W. Ochs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, George A. Oches III.

He is survived by four daughters, Laura Andrews of Marion, Judy Capello of Moncillo, Wis., Sheila Strand of Kirkland, Ill., and Jackie Shannon of Montgomery; two brothers, Jay Lammert of Wisconsin and Wallace Lammert of Utah; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Lammert.

Visitation was held Oct. 8 at Dieterie Memorial Home in Montgomery and Oct. 11 in Bridgeport, Neb., with burial in Oregon Trails Memorial Cemetery in Bridgeport.

Neel

Neel died Oct. 9 at Salem Springlake Care Center. She was a bookkeeper for Crittenden Motors for many years.

CROFTON, Md. ­ William David "Dee" Bradford, 75, died Oct. 1 at his home. He was born in Crayne, served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Wisconsin during World War II and attended Western Kentucky University and the University of Georgia. He retired as an executive from Chrysler Corporation where he had worked 35 years and later retired as an executive from Mid-Atlantic Toyota after 10 years. He was a member of Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church.

Bradford is survived by his wife, Anna Bradford; two sons, David Bradford of Charlotte, N.C., and Steven Bradford of Annapolis, Md.; a sister, Lois Fox of Chicago; and four grandchildren.

McKinney was life-long member of Pleasant Grove General Baptist Church which her family helped to establish many years ago.

Surviving are five sons, Jimmie McKinney of Marion, Doug McKinney of Joy, Gary McKinney and Donnie McKinney of Henderson and Larry McKinney of Marion, Ill.; four sisters, Mary Sills, Wilma Jean Ramage Belt and Edna Croft, all of Salem, and Virginia May of Mishawaka, Ind.; a brother, Richard Davis Croft of Marion; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene McKinney; two grandsons, Donnie Paul McKinney and Josh McKinney; a sister, Corine Bebout; and five brothers, Stanley Croft, Doug Croft, Jay Croft, Williard Croft and Cecil Croft. Her parents were Alonzo and Mae Croft of Salem.

Tosh

CHANDLER, Ind. ­ Dorothy Q. Tosh, 85, died Sept. 25 at her daughter's home in Newburgh, Ind.

Tosh was a 59-year member of Bethel Temple, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She worked at the Evansville State Hospital and retired in 1979 from the psychiatric unit at Welborn Baptist Hospital.

She is survived by three daughters, Sharon Byers of Newburgh, Ind., Bessie Rose West of Indianapolis, Ind., and Laurel Mason of Newburgh; a brother, Rabon Travis of Fredonia; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Ray Tosh, and a son, John Charles, in 1980.

PRINCETON, Ky. ­ John D. Hughes, 67, died Oct. 4 at Princeton Health Care Manor. He was a retired construction worker.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. ­ Gladys L. Kuhlenschmidt, 99, died Sept. 22 at Good Samaritan Home.

She and her late husband Gilbert operated a stand at "The Old Farmers Market" where they sold produce in Evansville for many years.

Kuhlenschmidt was a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ and the quilters circle at the church.

Surviving are a granddaughter, Deborah Padgett of Marion; a step-grandson; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 52 years, Gilbert, she was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Kuhlenschmidt; a grandson Trevor Kuhlenschmidt; three brothers; and two sisters.

Arden


EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Clifford K. Arden, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 22 at St. Mary's Riverside Continuing Care Center.

Arden was a 50-year charter member of Teamsters Local Union No. 215 where he was president from 1956-1987. During his tenure with Local 215, the membership grew from 1,500 to a high of 6,000 members. He was a valuable part of politics at the local and state level. Arden negotiated the first contract with the City of Evansville and organized the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation maintenance and custodian departments.

He played a major role in organizing several other Teamsters. He also served as Secretary Treasurer of the Joint Council 69 and the Indiana Conference of Teamsters.

The Evansville Teamsters building is known as the Cliff Arden Building on September of 1993.

He served on the Ivy Tech Board and the Evansville Airport Authority Board. He was a member of the Evansville Kennel Club and a licensed pilot. He was the owner of the former Cafe Venice, located in Downtown Evansville.

Arden was a World War II Veteran, where he served as a Master Sergeant in the Army. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alfreeda Croft Arden. He is also survived by the several nieces and nephews and several grand nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Arden.

Funeral services were held Aug. 26, 2002 at Browning Funeral Home in Evansville with Rev. Robert Vester officiating. Entombment followed in Oak Hill Mausoleum.

Davis was a charter member of the Marion VFW and attended Belles Mines Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Porcia Davis.

Nalley died Aug. 11 at St. Mary Medical Center in Evansville from injuries he suffered in a four-wheeler accident.

HIGHLAND, Ind. - Former Marion resident Robert G. "Bob" Dyer died July 17 at his home.

Dyer grew up in Marion, graduated from Marion High School where he was a starting half back in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He was a former fire chief for the Marion Fire Department. His life's work was as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Cook Dyer; three daughters, Donna Hofman, Kitty Dyer and Mary Ann Skvara; a son, Rick Dyer; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren, all of the Chicago area; a brother, Bill Dyer of Marion; and a sister, Margaret Weldon of Marion.

Alma Reta Broshears, 89, of Marion, died July 22 at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah. She was a member of Repton Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She earned her nursing degree from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing. She was a retired registered nurse.

PRINCETON, Ky. - Jayne Hagerty, 77, died July 12 at Caldwell County Hospital. She was a retired hotel maid supervisor. She was a member of St. Thomas of Caterbary Catholic Church in Chicago, Ill., where she lived for over 57 years before moving to Princeton. She was also a member of the Chicago, Ill., Uptown Ministry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Hagerty; four sons, Joseph Hagerty, Herbert Hagerty, Michael Hagerty and Timothy Hagerty; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren. Her parents were Robert and Margaret Nelson Ridley.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Ronald Thomas, 59, formerly of Marion, died July 12 in Alpharetta, Ind. He had worked at Western Electric and Lucent Technologies. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Thomas; two sons, Ronald Max and David Scott; his mother, Evalyn Thomas; two sisters, Pat DiMatteo and Kathisu Jordan; two brothers, Gordon Scott and Mark Thomas; and four grandchildren.

BURNA, Ky. - Funeral services for Willie G. Hargrove, 98, were held July 14 at Boyd Funeral Home in Salem. Rev. John East and Rev. Phillip Yancy officiated with burial in Duley Bluff Cemetery.

Hargrove, a member of Central Baptist Church, died July 11 at Livingston Hospital.

Surviving are two sons, Larry Hargrove of Burna and Phillip Hargrove of Taylor, S.C.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Markey Hargrove; a sister; two brothers; and a son, Joe Billy Hargrove. His parents were Robert E. and Laura Hughes Hargrove.

PRINCETON, Ky. - Peggy Sue Hughes, 55, died July 10 at her home. She was a homemaker and attended Assembly of God Church in Princeton.

Surviving are her husband, John Hughes of Princeton; a son, Tommy Vied of Marion; three brothers, Charles Corley of Marion, Roy Corley of Sturgis and Joe Corley of Evansville; a sister, Betty Oliver of Princeton; a granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born in Boyle, Miss., attended Bosse High School, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received medals of National Defense, the Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He was retired from the Earl C. Clements Job Corps Center as well as from Peabody Coal Camp No. 1 in Morganfield. He was a member of Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife of 10 years, Gina Shack; a daughter, Erica Shack of Marion; his parents, Mary and Charles Dunbar of Evansville; four sisters, Jeannie Wells of Atlanta, Antoinette Moore, Charles King and Pamela Buggs, all of Evansville; two brothers, Joseph Dunbar and Tyrone Dunbar, both of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews.

FARMERSVILLE, Texas - Rev. George Fournier, 67, died June 29. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean War. He pastored churches in Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas, including Second Baptist Church in Marion for more than 30 years.

Surviving are his wife, Lucy Fournier; a son, Paul Fournier of Austin, Texas; his stepmother, Lois Fournier of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Clifford Fournier of Bethel, Conn., and Robert Fournier of Baltimore; two sisters, Louise Gagne of Florida and Dorothy Fournier of Baltimore.

White
EDDYVILLE, Ky. - William S. "Bill" White, 83, died June 29 on his farm from injuries he suffered in a four-wheeler accident. He and his wife, Rachel Dorroh White, celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary June 28.

White was a farmer and member and trustee of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lyon County. He was treasurer and trustee of New Bethel Cemetery in Lyon County. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving as staff sergeant, First Battalion, 66th Armored Regiment. He served in Algeria-French Morocco, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He was employed 15 years at National Carbide in Calvert City.

White was a former deputy sheriff of Lyon County, serving from 1962-1974 under Sheriff Robert "Bock" White and Sheriff James "Curly" Thompson. He was Lyon County Sheriff from 1974-1978.

White was past-president and director of Lyon County Farm Bureau; was a past member of the Lyon County Extension Board; was on the ASCS committee in Lyon County and was an active member of the Democratic Executive Committee in Lyon County.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Rodney White of Eddyville; a sister, Velma Jones of Eddyville; two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert "Bock" White and Charles White; and his parents, Robert White and Grace Woodall White.

Funeral services were held July 3 at Lakeland Funeral Home with Dr. Jerrell White and Bro. Gates Bowman officiating. Burial was in New Bethel Cemetery.

MT. PLEASANT, Iowa - Daisy D. Rankin, 92, died June 29 at her home. Funeral services were held July 2 at Weir Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. A committal service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday at Gilbert Funeral Home followed by burial in Mapleview Cemetery.

Rankin was born in Crittenden County, graduated from CCHS in 1927 and received a teacher's certificate from Murray State Teacher's College. She taught and tutored students in grades one through eight. She and her husband, the late Harold Rankin, Sr., lived in Illinois, Louisville, New York, Iowa and Deleware where her husband's job as a meat inspector took them. The couple retired to Marion in 1968 but in 1985 moved to Mt. Pleasant.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, was a member of the PEO Sisterhood Chapter NZ of Mt. Pleasant and a former member of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club.

Surviving are two sons, Dr. Harold "Pete" Rankin of Mt. Pleasant and Bruce Rankin of Miami; five granddaughters; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank Hill and Ollie Bernal "Doc" Hill; and a sister, Aline Stalion. Her parents were George and Lillie Wilson Hill.

Simpkins
EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Billy W. Simpkins, 75, formerly of Marion, died July 3 at his home in Evansville.

He was a 1944 graduate of Frances High School and a World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Genevieve Simpkins; a son, Terry Simpkins of Yorktown, Va.; a daughter, Kitty Lowe of Old Hickory, Tenn.; a brother, W.L. Simpkins of Evansville; a sister, Linda Sue Tosh of Kuttawa; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Phillips.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Joseph Barnett Vaughan, 91, died June 9 at Good Samaritan Home. Vaughan was born in Marion and was a resident of Evansville since 1943. He worked as a geologist with Ashland Oil for 16 years; was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 1 of Lexington and of the Hadi Shrine of Evansville. He was also a member of Methodist Temple and its Crusader Class since 1950.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Friendly Vaughan; three sons, Larry B. Vaughan of Los Angeles, Calif., Jerryl W. Vaughan of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Randall B. Wanda Lee Stone, 72, of Marion, died May 29 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of Marion Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Willard Stone of Marion; three sons, Mike Stone of Marion, Mark Stone of Clarksville, Tenn., and Danny Stone of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Carter
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah ­ A graveside service for James A. Carter, 87, formerly of of Crittenden and Livingston counties, was held June 1 at Holladay Memorial Gardens in Holladay, Utah. Carter died May 30.

Mr. Carter was employed in fluorspar mining and construction and spent more than 30 years before retirement operating a tree nursery in Holladay and built golf courses in Utah and surrounding states.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Lucele Martin Carter, formerly of Crittenden County; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shirley; a son, James Robert Carter; a sister Mary Butler; and three brothers, Trice Carter, J.D. Carter and Mack Carter. His parents were Vernon and Florence Alley Carter.

Boone
IRVING, Texas ­ Jean Elizabeth Boone, 80, died June 2. She was a native of Washington state and has relatives in Crittenden County.

She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Bill Boone of Irving; three daughters, Bonnie Gagnon of Cashmere, Wash., Becky Coats of Irving and Betsy Moore of Irving; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Adams; her mother, Frances Adams Dolfay; and stepfather, Charles Dolfay.

A memorial service will be held June 8 at the Church of Christ in Irving, with burial in Wenatchee, Wash.

Chandler
John W. Chandler, 93, of Marion, died June 3 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a graduate of Marion High School and spent 50 years as a mail carrier, clerk, assistant postmaster and judge of the Crittenden County Court. He was a steward, lay speaker and men's Sunday school teacher in the Marion United Methodist Church for 25 years.

He was a member for 55 years of Bigham Lodge No. 256 F&AM and past Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky F&AM. He was a member of the Rizpah Shrine Temple in Madisonville, a charter member of Sahab Shrine Temple and charter member of Court No. 189 Royal Order of Jesters both of Sarasota, Fla., and was director of Court No. 189 in 1988.

Chandler lived in Sarasota for several years and later in Nashville.

Surviving are his wife, Ethel Roberts Kelly of Nashville; sister, Vanera Chandler of Marion; two daughters, Carolyn Iborg of Exton, Penn., and Judith Roberts of Manassas, Va.; three grandchildren; two step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Elkins Chandler; a brother, Emmett Chandler; and a stepdaughter, Sidney Hooper.

A memorial service, including Masonic Rites, will be held at 2 p.m., June 6 at Marion United Methodist Church with Rev. Wayne Garvey officiating. Burial will be in Mapleview Cemetery. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brizendine
GREENVILLE, Ky. ­ John Summers Brizendine, 86, died June 4. He attended Greenville Schools, Mcallie Military Academy and Centre College. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He entered the U.S. Army Air Force before the war in 1941 and was discharged a Captain. After the war, he joined his brother, Tom, in the wholesale grocery business in Greenville which became one of the largest and most progressive businesses of its kind in Kentucky. The company developed and served IGA Foodliners in most every town in western Kentucky and many stores in middle Tennessee. The brothers sold the business to another IGA wholesaler which later sold it to Super Valu.

Brizendine was the first president of Greenville Junior of Commerce, president of the Kiwanis Club, and a board member for Regional Mental Health, First State Bank, National IGA Enterprises, Local Housing Program, Wetterau, Inc., First Presbyterian Church and many youth organizations.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Kupisch of Marion and Charlotte Witry of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; a brother, Tom Brizendine; and five grandchildren, Margie Conrad of Denver, Colo., John Conrad of San Diego, Calif., Lee Conrad of Lexington, Allen Witry of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Laura Witry of Washington, D.C.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., June 8 at Gary's Funeral Home in Greenville. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

CARRSVILLE, Ky. ­ Roy Doug Bruce, 77, died June 3 at Versnick Health Care Center in Madisonville. He was a musician, playing electric steel guitar for area nursing homes.

He is survived by a brother, Ronald Bruce of Madisonville; a sister, Wilma Grace Rogers of Madisonville; a stepson, Jerry Johnson of Salem; a stepdaughter, Sheri Johnson of Paducah; two step grandchildren; and one great step grandchild.

HOBART, Ind. - Jesse L. Sullenger, 74, of Hobart, Ind., died May 18. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a retired line operator from U.S. Steel after 36 years. He served as a member of U.S.W.A. Union Local No. 1066.

He is survived by two sons, Rick Sullenger of Valparaiso, Ind., and James Sullenger of Hobart; five daughters, Connie Goodpaster of Lake Station, Ind., Vonnie Fields of Valparaiso, Rhonda Perrine of Portage, Ind., Pam Govert of Crown Point, Ind., and Beverly Galle of Hobart; a brother, Douglas Sullenger of Marion; a sister, Elizabeth Binkley of Valparaiso; 14 grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren.

Herbert W. Franklin, 82, of Marion, died May 4 at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo. Graveside services were held May 6 at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Rev. Herbert Alexander officiating.

Franklin was a retired security guard from the Kentucky State Penitentiary at Eddyville. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Pleasant Grove General Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Larry Franklin of Salem; and two cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila M. Franklin. His parents were Kyle and Corene Alley Franklin.

BRADENTON, Fla. - John W. Nation, 75, formerly of Tolu, died April 26 at his home. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church of Bradenton. He was retired from Fiberfill Corp., of Evansville and moved to Bradenton in 1986. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Nation; a sister, Clara Mae Brinkley of Madisonville; a brother, Harry Dean Nation of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Belt; a brother, Harold Lloyd Nation; and his parents, William Earl and Della Mae Nation.

Austin Cook, 76, of Marion, died April 29 at Crittenden Hospital. Van Pelt
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Mary Avery "Mitzi" Van Pelt, 77, died March 20 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

She earned a degree from Old Dominion University, and later worked as a tour guide in Washington conducting tours in French, Japanese, Italian, Spanish and English. She was active in the King's Daughters and served on the Board of Directors of the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

Her husband, retired USMC captain James C. Van Pelt, grew up in Marion.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, James C. "Jeff" Van Pelt, Jr., and William Thomas "Tom" Van Pelt; a daughter, Amanda Van Pelt Scott; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Van Pelt was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her father, Fred Tramel.

Gerald Byron Travis, 56, died April 25 at Shady Lawn Nursing Home in Cadiz. He was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, Woodmen of the World and was a Kentucky Colonel.

Surviving are a son, Benjamin Stanley Travis of Dawson Springs; and his mother, Marie Travis of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his father, Byron Travis.

Norma Faye Cochran, 53, died April 25 at Western Baptist Hospital. She was a former employee of Western Kentucky Quarter Horse Sales, a current employee of the Crittenden County Board of Education and a shareholder in Par-4 Plastics, Inc. She was of Pentecostal faith.

James W. Johnson, 80, of Marion, died April 29 at Crittenden Hospital.

He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church, owner of Johnson's Furniture & Appliances in Marion and Princeton, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Marion Rotary Club. He was a charter member and past president of Crittenden County Lions Club, a former Marion City Council member, a charter member of Marion Country Club, a Kentucky Colonel, a U.S. Army World War II veteran and a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret June Johnson of Marion; a son, James Carl Johnson of Marion; a daughter, Rebecca Johnson-Crider; a sister, Mary Margaret Roher of New Harmony; and four granddaughters of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Katie Johnson.

He was retired from Eaton Axel in Henderson and was a member of Marion Masonic Lodge.

Margaret "Pat" Alexander, 80, of Marion, died April 25 at Methodist Hospital in Morganfield.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Marion and a graduate of Morganfield High School.

Surviving are two daughters, Madonna Wyatt and Sandy Menser, both of Morganfield; a son, Tracy Rice of Marion; a stepdaughter, Betty Rich of Dixon; a stepson, George Rice of Salem; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, W.L. Rice and W.P. Alexander; and a son, Dickie Gough.

Westberry
HOUSTON, Texas - B. M. Westberry, 75, of Paducah, died April 29.

He was born in Georgetown, Louisiana and moved to Smithland, Ky., following the flood of 1937.

Westberry graduated from Livingston Central High School in 1944, attended Indiana University and Murray State University, and was awarded the Bernard Flexnor Scholarship to the University of Louisville College of Law. He graduated in 1950. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and was its Justice during his final year in law school.

He served as a member of the Army Air Corps during World War II and as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General's Corps of the United States Air Force during the Korean War.

He began the practice of law with his stepfather, Raymond Dycus, in Smithland. After the Korean War, he engaged in the practice of law in Marion. At the time of his death he was Of Counsel to the Paducah law firm of McMurry & Livingston. During his practice in Marion, he was the city attorney from 1965 to 1967 and the Crittenden County Attorney from 1954 to 1962 and from 1967 to 1974.

Serving his profession as a member of the House of Delegates of the Kentucky Bar Association from 1962 to 1969 and as a member of its Board of Governors from 1969 to 1980, he was elected by the membership of the association to serve as President from 1978 to 1979. Westberry was the first Chairman of the Judicial Ethics Committee for the Kentucky Bar Association and continued in that position until the time of his death. He also served as President of the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents.

At various times during his lifetime, he served his communities as Sunday School teacher at the Marion United Methodist Church, Chairman of the Board of the Crittenden Hospital, Trustee of Saint Andrews-Sewanee School, Sewanee, Tennessee, and Regent of Murray State University. He was Chairman of the Paducah Airport Board at the time of his death. He was a 32° Mason, Scottish Rite and a member of the Country Club of Paducah.

Westberry was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Paducah.

For over 50 years, Westberry practiced law throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was an early advocate of pro bono services for the poor and demonstrated his commitment often by donating his time and advice. Among his representative clients were Crushed Stone, Inc., its successor Vulcan Materials Company, and Jim R. Smith Contracting Company, Inc. He also represented David Reed and Jim Smith in their acquisition of the Paducah and Louisville Railroad, Inc. Earlier in his career he represented the Fluorspar Industry in western Kentucky, including Alcoa Aluminum and Reynolds Metals.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, the former Nancy Elizabeth Kent; two sons, R. Kent Westberry, a Louisville attorney, and William Bishop Westberry, a Houston, Texas businessman; three sisters, Doris Daigle, Patricia Callendar and Vickie McGee; and two grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Milner & Orr in Paducah. The family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - James W. Ablett, Sr., 85, formerly of Burna, died April 20 at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in Salem, and retired from the RCA Record Division.

Surviving are his wife, Eloise Head Ablett; and a son, James W. Ablett, Jr., both of Indianapolis; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James O. Ablett and Maude Bennett Ablett.

ELKHART, Ind. - Imogene Malcom, 83, formerly of Salem, died April 19 at Elkhart General Hospital. She was a member of Assembly of God Church in Elkhart. She was retired from G.M. Distributors in Elkhart and worked at Richardson Mobile Homes.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Bernard J. Weber, 84, of Bowling Green, died April 12. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post No. 1298 and a Crittenden County hunting lodge.

He served in World War II as a Staff Sgt. with the Army Air Corp.

Markham, who served in World War II and Korea, died April 13 at his home. He was a member of the VFW and Sturgis First Christian Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Linda Gass of Crittenden County and Carol Ann Markham of Louisville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Markham.

GRAND RIVERS, Ky. - Graveside services for Alexis Denae Rundles, infant daughter of J.R. and Melissa Crump Rundles of Grand Rivers, were held April 13 at Landrum Cemetery in Grand Rivers. Rev. Roger Rice officiated.

The infant died April 10 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

SMITHLAND, Ky. - Former Smithland mayor and fire chief Lee Reynolds, 72, died April 13 at Western Baptist Hospital.

Funeral services were held April 15 at Smith Funeral Chapel in Smithland with Rev. Billy Hurley officiating. Burial was in Smithland Cemetery.

Reynolds was a veteran of the Korean War and was owner and operator of Reynolds Grocery for several years. He was Smithland mayor from 1986-1989 and worked for the Smithland Fire Department for 60 years. He was chief for 15 years. He was a member of Scott's Chapel Church and Smithland Masonic Lodge No. 138 for 42 years.

Surviving are two sons, Tony Ferrell of Tiline and Dewayne Ferrell of Smithland; four sisters, Imogene Reid of Reidland, Alberta Jackson of Waukegan, Ill., Ann Barrett of Kuttawa and Sue Outland of Murray; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Reynolds. His parents were Edward and Hattie Reynolds.

CLAY, Ky. - Marlin Edward Whitsell, 87, died March 24 at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. He was retired from the Kentucky State Highway Department.

He was a retired maintenance worker for National Distillery after 44 years and a veteran of World War II.

SALEM, Ky. - Mildred Mitchell LeVan, 85, died March 11 at Livingston Hospital.

She and her husband operated Burna Feed Company from 1945-1962. After her husband's death in 1962, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she became co-owner of Mitchell Rubber Company. She retired in 1986 and returned to Salem. She was a charter member of the American Legion Post in Burna and a member of St. William Catholic Church.

LeVan is survived by a daughter, Sharon McDaniel; two brothers, Chester Mitchell of Covina, Calif., and Albert Mitchell of Carson City, Nev.; a sister, Bernadette Williams of Baton Rouge, La.; three grandchildren of Salem; and four great-grandchildren of Salem.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne LeVan; a brother; and a sister. Her parents were B.A. and Delphina Wurth Mitchell.

Gainey
LEDBETTER, Ky. - Funeral services for Chester Devoid Gainey, 80, of Ledbetter, were held March 5 at Boyd Funeral Home. Bro. Willie Guess officiated. Burial was in Cothran Cemetery.

He died March 2 at his home.

Gainey, a veteran of World War II, died March 2 at his home. He was a member of the 291 Infantry Regiment and was shot and captured in 1945 by the Germans. He was a prisoner of war for six months. He was honored during a ceremony in Miami at the war's end during which he received a Purple Heart medal from Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. After his military career, he was a truck driver, making his last run at age 80.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Mina Mae Gainey of Ledbetter; five daughters, Mona "Becky" Lanier of Decatur, Ill., Sandra Krenn of Kalamazoo, Mich., Joyce McKinney and Judy Sexton, both of Ledbetter, Tammy Noles of Smithland; three sons, Bobby Gainey and Will Gainey, both of Grand Rivers, and David Gainey of Ledbetter; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Newton Paris Kirk, 80, of Marion, died Feb. 24 at Crittenden Hospital.

He was a member of Tyner Chapel Church Independent and attended Cave Springs General Baptist Church. He was a former Marion Police officer, and retired after 20 years as fire chief at the Earl C. Clements Job Corps. Center. He also retired after 15 years as a bus driver for the Crittenden County School District. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II.

McKinney
Funeral services for Marie Ada McKinney, 99, of Newburgh, Ind., formerly of Marion, were held Feb. 23 at Gilbert Funeral Home with Dr. Darrell Clarke officiating. Burial was in Mapleview Cemetery.

McKinney died Feb. 21 at Woodlands Convalescent Center in Newburgh.

She is survived by a two sisters, Hester Nunn and Dorothy Lockhart, both of Marion; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman McKinney; and a daughter, Naoma Nixon.

Drennan
Geneva Drennan, 81, of Marion, died Feb. 23 at Crittenden Hospital. She was a member of Cave Springs General Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Drennan of Marion; three daughters, Marcia Davidson, Marilyn Travis and Madeline Henderson, all of Marion; two sisters, Vivian Hayes of Seymour, Ind., and Lucille Zimmerman of Vine Grove; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Carlton Drennan, Jr.; a brother, Herbert Sullivan; and a sister, Verna Gregory.

Spurrier
Mary Aladine Spurrier, 85, of Marion, died Feb. 23 at Crittenden County Convalescent Center.

She was a member of Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was pianist for 30 years.

Surviving are a son, Don Spurrier of Marion; a daughter, Dana Mullins of St. Genevieve, Mo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Feb. 25 at Rosebud Cemetery with Rev. David Frisby officiating. Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Hayden "Doc" Hodge, 84, of Marion, died Feb. 26 at Crittenden Hospital.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Surviving are a son, Keith Hodge of Marion; a daughter, Linda Yandell of Marion; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Aline Hodge; and a son, John Hodge.

William O. Brown, 76, of Marion, died Feb. 15 at Caldwell County Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II and a member of the American Legion Post No. 111. He served 33 years as a police officer for the City of Marion where he also served as Chief of Police.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Brown of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a former teacher at Lanse Creuse High School in Clinton Township, Mich., and former director of vocational education at the Pankow Career Center in Clinton Township.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Novikoff of Princeton, W.V.; a sister, Helen Jo Guess of Princeton, Ky.; five grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by a son, Carl Layman Stone; a sister, Clara Etta Howerton; and a nephew.

Annie L. Harville, 91, of Wilson County, Tenn., formerly of Fredonia, died Feb. 13 at Crittenden Hospital.

Harville was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Caldwell County and worked at several businesses in Fredonia before her retirement.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marion Harville.

Her parents were Will and Dottie Cunningham Trammel.

Woodall, a retired elementary and high school teacher, once lived and taught in Crittenden County. She died Feb. 15 at her home. She was a native of Russellville and was a member of Penn Avenue Baptist Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was a member of Seven Springs Baptist Church for 60 years where she taught the women's Sunday school class for many years.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Brightwell of Hammond; a son, Elton "Satch" Brasher of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Naomi Ward of Hobart, Ind.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Alexander
James Francis Alexander, 76, of Marion, died Feb. 17 in Tuscan, Ariz. He was a member of Piney Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Piney Cemetery Board of Directors and an honorary member of the Local No. 37 Asbestos Workers Union in Evansville.

Survivors include a son, Marc Alexander of Paducah; three sisters, Mary Irene Croft of Salem, Martha Dixon of Licking, Mo., and Sarah Ford of Marion; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John W. Alexander. His parents were Ercel and Annabel Alexander.

Teer
William Glenn Teer, 80, formerly of Marion, died Feb. 10 in Flint, Mich., at the home of his caregivers, Linda and Rolland McGinnis.

A World War II U.S. Army veteran, Teer served as a heavy mortar crewman and rifle sharpshooter in defense of the Panama Canal Zone. He also served in the European Theatre during the final days of the war and the ensuing occupation after Germany's defeat. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Michigan.

He was a retired machinist with General Motors in Flint, Mich., and a member of the local United Automobile Workers Union.

He is survived by two sons, William Noah Teer of Monroe, Mich., and Michael Glenn Teer of Sandwich, Ill; four sisters, Birdie Farmer, Helen Cullen and Betty Tabor, all of Marion, and Katherine Fowler of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Tom Teer of Marion and Forrest Teer of Robards, Ky.; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Teer and R.C. Teer, and his parents, Ed and Gussie Teer.

Tabor
Joseph C. Tabor, 74, of Indianapolis, Ind., died Feb. 10.

Tabor, born in Marion, was a non-commission officer for the U.S. Air Force for 23 years and served in the Vietnam War, and later was an electrical engineer for American Industrial Corp., for 20 years, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 495 and the VFW Post No. 7119.

Funeral services will be held Feb. 14 at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Funeral Home in Indianapolis. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Surviving are his wife, Petra Bibalda Tabor of Indianapolis; three daughters, Charlotte Kerschner and Ginger Tabor, both of Indianapolis, and Maria Graham of Shirley, Ind.; two sons, Peter C. She is survived by her daughter, Erma Perrin of Panama City Beach, Fla.; a son, Nick Ornduff of Salem; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.A. "Catfish" Ornduff; a sister; and her parents, Byrd Brown Barger and Lucy Condacy Robinson Barger.

Robert Vasseur, 58, of Cadiz died Feb. 6 at his home.

He was a member of South Land Baptist Temple in Paducah and a farmer.

Maxfield
Longtime Cadiz businessman, civic leader and funeral director Chastine Vance Maxfield, 75, died Feb. 4 at his home following an extended illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Feb. 7 at Goodwin Funeral Home, with Revs. Phillip Salmon and Andy Buckingham officiating. Burial will follow in East End Cemetery. M. Thomas Davis will deliver a eulogy.

Maxfield was born in Crittenden County on March 7, 1926 the son of Isaac Newton and Ina Ialeen Adams Maxfield.

Maxfield began his career in 1951 with Goodwin Funeral Home in Cadiz and remained there 41 years, retiring in 1992 and selling the business to John R. Vinson, III.

He was a graduate of John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science.

A corporal in the U. S. Marine Corps during World War II, he fought in the battle of Iwo Jima and the Occupation of China. He was a member of Cadiz Baptist Church and extended a hand of warmth to churches throughout Trigg County.

"Chat," as he was known to his friends, was a charter member of the Rotary Club and also the Cadiz Civitan Club where he had served as President. He was a 50-year member and former commander of American Legion Post No. 74 and was service officer for 28 years. He was a charter member of Veteran's of Foreign War Post No. 7890, holding lifetime membership.

A former member of Cadiz-Trigg County Chamber of Commerce, he served as board member, and was honored in 1991 as Citizen of the Year. He served on the Library Board of Directors, Trigg County Draft Board and the Cadiz Federal Public Housing Commission. In the 1960s, he served as chairman of the Trigg County March of Dimes, prior to the development of the Salk Vaccine. He was a member and past Master of Cadiz Masonic Lodge No. 121, F. & A. M., member of Ophelia Chapter No. 55, Order of the Eastern Star, Rizpah Temple, Swigert Chapter No. 40, R.A.M., Cadiz Shrine Club, Scottish Rite and 32 Degree Mason.

In 1973, he received the Conservation Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Conservation from the Crittenden County Conservation District.

He was a member of the Kentucky Funeral Directors Association, Western Kentucky District Funeral Directors Association and the National Funeral Directors Association.

Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Martha Doom Maxfield of Cadiz; and a daughter, Judith C. Maxfield Bilyeu of Nashville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eugene "Jack" Newton and Louis Vernon Maxfield.

Christal Guess, 94, of Hobart, Ind., died Dec. 10. Funeral services were held Dec. 13 at Rees Funeral Home in Hobart with Rev. David R. Webb officiating. Burial was in Blake Cemetery in Portage.

Guess lived in Hobart, Gary and the Glen Park area for 59 years.

She is survived by two sons, Lonnie Guess of Centre, Ala., Col. Arlin Guess of Fort Polk, La.; a daughter, Willa Fletcher of Hobart; a sister, Elizabeth Manus of Dycusburg; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Guess; two sons, Calvin Guess and Leon Guess; and a daughter, Violet.

Funeral services for Katherine M. Rushing, 66, of Marion, will be held at 10 a.m., Jan. 24 at Gilbert Funeral Home. Rev. Rodney Groff will officiate. Burial will be in Mexico Cemetery.

Rushing, a member of Mexico Baptist Church, died Jan. 22 at Salem Springlake Care Center.

Surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Sharp of Salem; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

Rushing was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Rushing; and a son, Robert Rushing.

Mamie Croft Johnson, 91, of Salem, died Jan. 20 at Rivers Bend Retirement Community in Kuttawa. She was a member of Pleasant Grove General Baptist Church.

Hurst of Gilbert, Ariz., Phillip Hurst of Moulton, Ala., and Tommy Hurst, Jr., of Marion; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tommy Hurst, Sr., and her second husband, Albert Owen Johnson; a grandchild, James Michael Hurst; three brothers; and three sisters. Her parents were William Thomas and Dora Patillo Croft.

McMican
Robert Edwin McMican, 80, of Marion, died Jan. 21 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a member of Marion Baptist Church, the American Legion Post No. 111 and Rotary International. McMican was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Alberta McMican of Marion; two sons, Bob McMican of Atlanta and Monte McMican of Victorville, Calif.; a brother, Don McMican of Allen Park, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Vernetta Ordway, 80, of Marion, died Jan. 11 at Western Baptist Hospital.

Johnson was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Jennings; her second husband, Harry Johnson, Sr.; a daughter, June Owen; a step-daughter, Dorothy Hardin; 11 brothers and sisters. Her parents were Charles A. and Eliza Jane Fletcher.

He was a member of Salem Church of Christ, the American Legion Post in Burna and a 46-year member of Carrsville Lodge No. 812. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy's Construction Battalion. He was retired from SKW in Calvert City.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Beatrice Chittenden Hosick; two sons, Casper Dwight Hosick and James Russell Hosick, both of Smithland; two brothers, Walzie Hosick and Carl F. "Tommy" Hosick, both of Salem; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters; four brothers; and his parents, Stella Watson Hosick and Marion Hosick.

Holman
Elsie Edmonds Holman, 68, of Ledbetter, died Jan. 5 at Livingston Hospital.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Russell Joe Holman, Jr.; two daughters, Vickie Wood of Fort Irwin, Calif., and Rita Ray of Ledbetter; four sons, Terry Holman of Smithland, Jerry Holman of Grand Rivers, Charles Holman of Metropolis, Ill., and Gary Holman of Smithland; two sisters, Charlene Riley of Smithland and Avanell Fisher of Paducah; a brother, Charles Edmonds of Smithland; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchilden; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Martha Edmonds; twin sons Ronnie and Lonnie Holman; a brother, Everett Rhea; and a sister, Edith Lynch.

Rayburn
Maurice Rayburn, 85, of Lola, died Jan. 3 at Livingston Hospital.

Surviving are a daughter, Tiffany Rayburn Boswell of Palm Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim Rayburn and Francis Lax Rayburn.

Private graveside services officiated by Dr. Darrell Clarke were held recently for Warren G. Wood, 75, of Marion. He died Dec. 30 at Palm Bay Community Hospital in Palm Bay, Fla.

Gilbert Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Wood was a World War II veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper. He was a member of Salem Masonic Lodge No. 81 and the Second Baptist Church of Chicago Heights, Ill. He retired from Pyro Mining Company and served on the Crittenden County Airport Board.

Surviving are his wife, Marlene Wood of Marion; four daughters, Linda Costolo of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Patricia Jones of Magnolia, Ill., and Brenda Buchanan and Toni Wood, both of Wenona, Ill.; two sons, Steven Wood of Marion and Warren K. Wood of Owensboro; two brothers, John Wood of Marion and R.P. Wood of Madisonville; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Elva Wood; and a sister, Jean Enzer.

Quertermous
Funeral services for James Quertermous, 80, of Fredonia, were held Jan. 7 at Lakeland Funeral Home in Eddyville with Dr. Jerrell White and Rev. Jeff Devine officiating. Burial was in Fredonia Cemetery.

He was a retired farmer and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Lyon County.

Surviving are his wife, Dottie Robertson Quertermous; a son, John Quertermous of La Place, Ill.; a daughter, Cathy Peterson of Savoy, Ill; two stepsons, Curt Phelps of Crayne and Todd Phelps of Fredonia; a stepdaughter, Sandra Brockmeyer; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Brockmeyer Quertermous; brothers; and sisters. His parents were John Franklin and Josie Dalton Quertermous.

Hendrick, a member of Hampton United Methodist Church, died Dec. 22 at Lourdes Hospital. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cairo, Ill., the Royal Arch Masons of Metropolis, Ill., was a Kentucky Colonel and served 30 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a Master Sergeant.

Surviving are two sisters, Evelyn Lygon of Lebanon, Pa., and Rebia Tapley of Cairo, Ill.; a brother, Bernie Hendrick of Horn Lake, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Burney Hancock Hendrick and Nellie Railey Hendrick; two brothers, Floyd Hendrick and Paul Hendrick; and a sister, Mary Johnson.

Kinslow
Tom Kinslow, 64, of Princeton, died Dec. 30 at Caldwell County Hospital. He was a retired purchasing agent for Johnson Controls.

He was a member of Second Baptist Church of Princeton.

Surviving are his wife, Patsy Burchett Kinslow; a son, Morgan Kinslow of Benton; three daughters, Debbie Kinslow of Hopkinsville, Kim Kinslow of Paducah and Melissa Conner of Marion; a sister, Julia Schleff of Louisville; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Jackson Kinslow; and his parents, Morgan Lee Kinslow and Anna Frances Jackson Kinslow.

James O. Watson, 81, of Marion, died Dec. 31 at Crittenden Hospital. He was a member of Marion United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post No. 111 in Marion. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Watson.

Mable Sutton, 86, of Eddyville, died Jan. 1 at Rivers Bend Retirement Center in Kuttawa. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church and the Fairview Homemakers Club.

Surviving are four sons, Stacy Sutton of Crittenden County, Leon Sutton of Eddyville, Babe Sutton of Lyon County and Rex Sutton of Ashland; two sisters, Laurelle O'Daniel of Lyon County and Lieuvena Shaw of Haile, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly Sutton; a brother, James O'Daniel; two sisters, Blanche Cherry and Almerine McNeely; and her parents, J.W. "Watt" O'Daniel and Myrtle Griggs O'Daniel.
