Library catalog now online
Thanks to newly purchased Internet technology, Crittenden County Public Library’s extensive list of books is now online.
Residents can browse through the library’s 40,000-volume inventory with the click of a mouse online at www.crittendenlibrary.org. The old card catalog system – made obsolete a few years ago by the computer – would be proud of the easy search methods using author, title, subject or key words. The online system lets you know, too, if the book is on the shelf or currently checked out.
You can even browse books by subject to look for titles that might be of interest.
Additionally, the library has added several new public-use computers, replacing some of the older models that patrons had been using for several years. One can check online email accounts, surf the ‘Net, order products or do personal or family research, said Librarian Regina Merrick.
The eight new PCs were bought with grant funds from the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The library has a total of 10 computers available for public use, with plans to install two more for kids’ games and for the children’s literature section, said Merrick.
The new automated book inventory system is also available in the library. The new system was installed a couple of weeks ago while the library was closed for week.
“We are still in transition and trying to fix the glitches... so please be patient,” Merrick said.
The library is also a wireless Internet hot spot, the only one in Marion where the public can access the World Wide Web from a laptop anywhere inside and for a limited distance outside the building.
Merrick said that while the library was closed for the technology upgrade a few weeks ago, a few patrons pulled up out front of the library and logged onto the Internet via the wireless network.
The library has a wide variety of books, audio and video titles available for checkout and a genealogy section.
“The Christian fiction section is not our biggest section, but it’s our most popular,” Merrick said.
The library keeps current issues of The Wall Street Journal, The Courier Journal, The Paducah Sun, The Crittenden Press and several magazines.
Checking out books from the library is free for any Crittenden County resident. There are fees for late returns.
