Moss returns opening kickoff
for a touchdown
MARION, Ky. -- Rocket sophomore Shawnte Moss returned the opening kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown and quickly knocked the breath out of a Union County team already reeling from three straight shutouts to start the season.
Crittenden took advantage of five Union County turnovers and a solid ground game to beat the Braves 41-12 for the first time since 1985. The Rockets led 35-0 early in the fourth quarter before the Braves finally notched their first points of the season late in the game against the Rocket reserves.
Union was able to move the football at intervals, but timely plays by the Rocket defense and some costly Brave turnovers kept Union winless in four games this season. It's the worst start for Union in about 20 years. Crittenden improved to 3-0.
Demetic Moss led Crittenden's rugged rushing attack with 70 yards on just eight carries. Ryan Bradham pitched in 44 yards and Jared Asbridge 39.
Rocket quarterback Sean Thompson, who was expected to showcase his throwing abilities against Union, never had an opportunity as Crittenden powered ahead early and never had to resort to the air. Thompson did rush for 38 yards on four carries, showing moments of deceptive moves and quickness on the corner.
Senior cornerback Josh James had a big
game, intercepting a pass and recording a sack and tackle for
loss. Crittenden's first-team defense didn't allow Union County
a first down throughout the entire third period.
Linebacker Brad Hart and backup cornerback Blake Gardner also
picked off Union County passes from backup QB Caleb Jenkins. Gardner
returned his interception 25 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.
Union starting quarterback Corey Callaway, who came into the game
nursing a shoulder injury, was knocked out on the Braves' second
possession after he dropped back to pass and was hit hard by Rocket
senior guard Judd Woodward. Callaway never returned to the game
and Woodward went on to record another sack on the Union backup
quarterback later in the game.
Union was able to put up some respectable
numbers, but almost all of it was late in the game as Crittenden's
mop-up crew finished off the fourth period.
