Demetric Mosss looks for running room toward a career-high 138 yards.

Rockets win district opener
Moss rushes for 138, Crittenden overcomes 4 fumbles

MARION, Ky. - Thanks to steller play by the offensive line and defense, Crittenden County overcame four fumbles to win its Class A Second District opener Friday night at home, beating Russellville 19-3.

The game was played on a soggy field and a light, misting rain for the first half. Although each team had four turnovers, none led to touchdowns. However, Crittenden did have three scoring opportunities foiled by the fumbles, coughing the ball up deep in Russellville territory three times. The Rockets fumbled at the Rusellville 11 nad 15 in the second quarter alone.

Junior halfback Demetric Moss rushed for a career-high 138 yards as the Rockets employed a new I-formation offensive attack for the first time this sesaon. Senior Ryan Bradham had 73 yards on 10 carries, which helped soften the blow of an early out by fullback Jared Asbridge, who re-injured his knee on the second series of the game and did not return. The Rockets ran for a season-high 304 yards as Moss broke out of a three-week funk in which he had gained just 21 yards in three contests.

The game was very close until the fourth period although Crittenden never trailed. Russellville has plenty of speed, but the Rocket defense contained it all night. A third of the Panthers' 33 rushing plays were snuffed out for no gain or negative yardage. Yet Russellville stayed close and even trimmed the margin to 6-3 early in the fourth period with a 30-yard field goal on its best drive of the game.

Crittenden responded to the immediate threat and marched down field 65 yards behind runs of 30 and 20 yards by Moss and Bradham, respectively. Quarterback Sean Thompson punched in the touchdown from the one and Crittenden silenced the upset-minded Panthers.

The Rockets tacked on a late seven points after Russellville went for it on fourth down from their own 20 and failed. Three plays later, Moss rambled in for a 15-yard touchdown and Tommy Harris kicked the point-after.

The Rockets head down the home stretch with just thre games to play and sporting a 5-2 record. Next week, Crittenden takes a break from the district schedule to host Fulton City for homecoming. The Pilots lost 50-8 to Murray Friday night.

Crittenden's defense dominated the game like this play by Ryan Bradham, Ben Aull and an unidentified Rocket.
