Rockets win third straight
MORGANFIELD – Crittenden County's improving offense made it look good on the scoreboard, but it was the Rocket defense that made it stick.

Crittenden won its third straight game Friday at Union County, bludgeoning the coachless Braves 42-22.

Playing with their head coach and defensive coordinator suspended from the game by the Union County School System, the Braves fell behind early as Crittenden scored on its first four possessions and led 29-6 at the half. Junior Rocket running back Rodney Robertson scored all of the first-half touchdowns – a couple on runs of 63 and 42 yards.

Robertson went on to score another TD in the last half and finished with 146 yards rushing and 42 receiving. He had one scoring reception called back for a holding penalty and would have tied the school record for touchdowns in a game, but fumbled into the end zone late in the contest.

Although the offense piled up 367 total yards, Crittenden's defense stole the headline by stuffing the Union County running game and pinning the Braves down in critical situations. Union was just 1-for-10 on third-down plays and were thrown for a loss on 11 plays. The Braves netted just five yards on the ground, but managed 211 through the air against Crittenden's secondary, which played better and gave up only a couple of long plays after the game was well in hand.

The Rockets made the most of its big-play settings, converting on 5-of-5 fourth-down plays, including one fake punt and two scoring plays.

The victory helps the Rockets recuperate from a slow start. On a three-game winning streak, Crittenden turns its attention back to the district race next week when it hosts Fulton County. The winner will clinch third-place in the district and avoid playing No. 2 Mayfield in the first round of Class A First Region playoffs.

Crittenden's Gaige Courtney played big on defense all night and came
up just short on catching this pass on offense in the first half.
