Hancock comes alive in 4th
Rocket playoff hopes in jeopardy

MARION, Ky. Oct. 20 -- With leading rusher Jeramie Sorina sidelined with a case of pneumonia and its playoff hopes hanging in the balance, Crittenden County came up empty against Class A Second District foe Hancock County Friday night.

The Hornets used a 21-point fourth quarter to open up an otherwise close game and beat the Rockets 28-0.

Crittenden turned the ball over four times – on a fumble and three interceptions. The Hornets used their first interception of Rocket QB Taylon Polk to take a 7-0 lead on the first series of the game. Crittenden had moved down field and was knocking on the end zone's door when Hancock's Derek Roach picked off a pass and went 85 yards untouched for a TD.

Crittenden's defense dug in and held the Hornets in check until the final period. Meanwhile, the Rocket offense sputtered without Sorina at tailback. Hancock's defense, geared to stop the run, didn't give the Rockets much of anything on the ground and when Crittenden tried to pass, the results were even worse. Polk was intercepted three times and the Rockets' only fumble came at end of five-yard pass to sophomore Rodney Robertson. Crittenden managed just one first down the entire second half.

The Hornets piled up almost all of their offensive numbers in the fourth period. At halftime, Hancock had rushed for just 76 yards but finished the game with 382. The Hornets' only pass was intercepted by Crittenden senior Evan Smiley near his own goal line.

Freshman J.D. Gray led the Rockets with 52 yards on 14 carries and Polk rushed for 45 on six carries. Robertson, the team's second leading rusher behind Sorina, was held to minus 4 yards.

The loss was especially disheartening for the Rockets, whose playoff hopes had been high after winning two straight district games following a poor start this season. Now, due to some recent upsets elsewhere in the district, Crittenden may not even make the postseason unless it wins its final regular season game next week at home against Russellville.
